Hardboiled Web Design

Feb 3 2011

Still sticking with my new years resolution to read one book per month, I just recently finished reading Hardboiled Web Design, by Andy Clarke, over the weekend.

From the book's web page:

Hardboiled Web Design is for people who want to understand why, when and how to use the latest HTML5 and CSS3 technologies in their everyday work. Not tomorrow or next week, but today.

After reading this book, I do believe it is a definite must for all web designers this year. It also has inspired me to revisit my own site with a little facelift of its own - though it's still very much a work in progress (and I wouldn't exactly consider it "Hardboiled" quite yet.)

The key takeaways here are not so much how to use CSS3 and HTML5, but also how to create fallback experiences for browsers that don't support those experiences while rewarding users of browsers that do. Then second, just having the mindset of not waiting for CSS3 to be "ready". (because you'll be waiting a while.)

I would also recommend for those interested in the subject to give CSS3 For Web Designers by Dan Cerderholm a read first as it's a nice quick introduction to CSS3; then dive right in to Hardboiled Webdesign. (While you're at it give HTML5 for Web Designers by Jeremy Keith a read, too.)
